About Random URL Slug

Random URL Slug generates readable, URL-friendly slugs by joining random dictionary words with hyphens, the kind of identifier used for articles, links and demo records where a numeric id would be ugly. Choose how many words go in each slug and how many slugs to produce.

Each slug is made of that many random words drawn from a pool of thirty lowercase entries - apple, banana, cherry and the like - joined by hyphens. The default run produces five slugs of three words each, one per line, and every word is drawn afresh so repeated runs give different results.

Two things keep the generator honest. The count is clamped to a window of one to one hundred, but the words count is not clamped by the calculation itself - the field hints a minimum and maximum, yet a value of zero produces an empty line. The word pool is small and nothing enforces uniqueness, so a word can repeat within a slug and entire slugs can repeat across a run.

How to use Random URL Slug

  1. 1 Set the Words field to how many words each slug should contain.
  2. 2 Set the Count field to how many slugs you want.
  3. 3 Run the tool to read one slug per line.

Frequently asked questions

Where do the words come from?

A fixed pool of thirty lowercase dictionary words, from apple and banana through shadow and spark. The words are drawn at random and joined with hyphens.

Why did I get an empty line?

A words count of zero produces a slug with no words, which is an empty line. The words field hints a minimum of one, but the calculation reads whatever value it is given.

Can two slugs in one run be identical?

Yes. Nothing enforces uniqueness, so the same word can appear twice in one slug and whole slugs can repeat across a run. There is no deduplication option.

Can I use my own words or a different separator?

No. The word pool is fixed and the separator is always a hyphen, with no numbers and no way to supply a custom list or change the join character.

What Random URL Slug does not do

Knowing the edges of a tool saves more time than another list of its features. These are the cases where it will not do what you might expect.

  • The words count is not clamped by the run itself. The field hints a minimum of one and a maximum of six, but a value of zero produces an empty line, and the calculation reads whatever number it is given.
  • The word pool is only thirty entries and nothing enforces uniqueness, so the same word can appear twice in one slug and entire slugs can repeat across a run - there is no deduplication and no way to supply your own word list.
  • The separator and the alphabet are fixed. Hyphens join lowercase words with no numbers, no custom separator and no length constraint, so a slug can be very long or, with a words value of zero, empty.
