About Random Word

Random Word returns words drawn from a built-in English list, one per line. It is useful for generating readable sample data — column headings, placeholder product names, test records — without the artificial look of a sequence of numbers.

Because the words come from a fixed list rather than a dictionary file, the vocabulary is limited and every word is a common concrete noun or adjective. That keeps the output plausible for a UI mock, and it means the tool is not a source of rare words, spelling variants or terms from any specialist domain.

Expect repeats once you ask for a large batch: each word is drawn independently, so duplicates are normal rather than a defect, and a list of a hundred words will contain far fewer than a hundred distinct ones. If you need guaranteed-unique values, generate them and remove duplicates afterwards rather than relying on the draw.

How to use Random Word

  1. 1 Set how many words you want.
  2. 2 Copy the list, which comes back one word per line.
  3. 3 Remove duplicates if the values need to be distinct.

Frequently asked questions

Are duplicates possible?

Yes, and likely in a large batch, because each word is drawn independently from a limited list. If uniqueness matters, sort the output and remove repeated entries before using it as a key or an identifier.

How large is the vocabulary?

Small — a few dozen common English words. That is what makes the output read naturally in a mock-up, and it is also why it cannot substitute for a real dictionary or a word list for a puzzle.

Can I use it for passphrases?

The passphrase generator does that job with the same word list, but the security caveat applies: a short list means limited search space. For credentials protecting real accounts, a long random password is the better choice.

How Random Word behaves in detail

These are the specifics of this implementation — the exact ranges, defaults and fixed settings you are working with.

Parameter Value
Word pool 30 entries — common English nouns from apple through spark
Selection one uniform pick per line, drawn with Math.random()
Batch output 1 to 100 words, default 10, one per line
Case and form lowercase exactly as stored; no capitalisation or inflection is applied

What Random Word does not do

Knowing the edges of a tool saves more time than another list of its features. These are the cases where it will not do what you might expect.

  • A 100-word batch is drawn from a 30-word pool, so repeats are certain rather than occasional, and there is no draw-without-replacement mode even though the pool is smaller than the largest allowed batch.
  • No filtering exists: you cannot ask for a word length, a part of speech or a starting letter, and you cannot exclude words already used, because the tool holds no dictionary beyond the 30 stored strings.
  • Every line is a single lowercase word. There is no sentence or phrase mode, no capitalisation and no punctuation, so a word list built for display still has to be formatted downstream.
