About Serial Number Generator

Serial Number Generator produces batches of product serial numbers in the familiar hyphenated form. Set how many segments each number should have and how many numbers you need, and the page returns one per line - four segments gives codes shaped like K7QM-3XB9-PL02-WH5R.

Each segment is exactly four characters drawn from the thirty-six characters of the digits and the uppercase alphabet, and the segments are joined with hyphens. That keeps the length predictable, which is what you want when the numbers have to fit a printed label or a fixed-width field, and it makes them easy to read aloud in groups.

Segments run from two to eight and a batch can hold up to a hundred numbers, so the output covers anything from a short test set of a few dozen items to a quick run of a few thousand combinations. Copy the list straight out of the result - the values are generated in the page and nothing is stored afterwards.

How to use Serial Number Generator

  1. 1 Choose how many segments each serial number should have; four is filled in to start with.
  2. 2 Set how many numbers you need, up to a hundred per run.
  3. 3 Generate the list and copy it out of the result area.
  4. 4 Run it again for another batch if you need more than a hundred.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a check digit that proves a serial number is genuine?

No. The values are random characters with no computed character and no verification step, so nothing in the output distinguishes a code this page produced from one somebody invented. If your scheme needs a check digit, it has to be added separately after the codes are generated.

Can the same serial number come up twice?

It is not prevented. The characters come from the ordinary random number generator with no register and no comparison against what has already been produced, so duplicate lines are possible in principle - and a duplicate would only be noticed after the codes had been printed and applied.

Why are the characters uppercase only?

The alphabet is the twenty-six uppercase letters plus the ten digits, which is a common convention for serials because it removes any question of whether a letter should be read as capital or small when the code is transcribed by hand. The trade-off is that the digits zero and one sit alongside the letters O and I, which are easy to confuse on a label.

Can I add a fixed prefix, such as a year or a product code?

Not from this page. The output is only the random segments and their hyphens, with no field for a prefix, a suffix or a separator of your own, so any fixed part has to be added when the list is pasted into a spreadsheet or a template.

How Serial Number Generator behaves in detail

These are the specifics of this implementation — the exact ranges, defaults and fixed settings you are working with.

Parameter Value
Inputs a segments field defaulting to 4, declared from 2 to 8, and a count field defaulting to 5, declared from 1 to 100
Alphabet thirty-six characters - the digits 0 to 9 and the uppercase letters A to Z
Shape each segment is exactly four characters, and segments are joined with hyphens - four segments give the form XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX
Case uppercase only; lowercase letters are not in the alphabet
Randomness source Math.random - the ordinary pseudo-random generator, not the cryptographic one
Output one serial per line, as many lines as the count field requests, with no separator or header

What Serial Number Generator does not do

Knowing the edges of a tool saves more time than another list of its features. These are the cases where it will not do what you might expect.

  • It does not compute or verify a check digit. Product serials usually carry a final character derived from the rest so that a mistyped code can be rejected, and nothing of the sort is produced or checked here - any string this page returns is only as valid as the numbering scheme you impose on it separately.
  • Uniqueness is not guaranteed. Values come from Math.random with no register and no comparison against earlier output, so nothing on the page prevents the same code appearing twice in one run or turning up again in an unrelated later run, and a collision would only be noticed after the codes had been printed.
  • Ambiguous characters are left in. The alphabet includes both the digit 0 and the letter O, and both the digit 1 and the letter I, so a serial printed or read aloud can be mis-transcribed with no way to tell the two apart - and there is no option to drop those characters or to generate a lowercase, delimited or fixed-prefix variant.
