About Random Username
Random Username produces short, readable account names for test data. Each name is one whole word drawn from a fixed list of thirty short English nouns - apple, knight, ocean, spark and the like - with a random number appended when the numbers option is left on, which it is by default.
The number, when present, is drawn between zero and nine hundred and ninety-nine and appended without padding, so tiger7 and tiger701 are both possible and the length of the name varies from one line to the next. Everything is emitted in lower case, matching the case of the words in the list, and the count field decides how many names come back, one per line, from one to one hundred. It is the quickest way to fill a sign-up form, a user table or a fixture with names that read more naturally than user1 and user2.
The vocabulary is the thing to plan around, because it is deliberately tiny. Thirty words mean that with the numbers switched off there are only thirty possible outputs, and even with numbers on the space is small enough that repeats appear early. This is a generator for placeholder names, not a source of unique account identifiers - it never produces separators, capitals or two-word names.
There are no length or character controls either. There is no minimum length, no option for an underscore or a dot between the word and the number, no substitution of letters for digits and no way to fix the digit width, so a service that demands eight characters, a capital or a special symbol will reject most of what comes out. And because the draws are independent, the same word with the same number can appear twice in one batch, with no de-duplication, no sorting and no check that a name is free anywhere - the list is emitted in the order it was drawn.
How to use Random Username
- 1 Leave the numbers option on, or switch it off for a bare word, such as tiger.
- 2 Set the count, from one to one hundred names.
- 3 Press calculate to generate the list, one name per line.
- 4 Remove any repeats before using the names as distinct accounts.
Frequently asked questions
How many possible usernames are there?
With numbers switched off, exactly thirty - one per word in the list. With numbers on, thirty words times a thousand values, so thirty thousand combinations, but the draws are independent and repeats appear quickly in a large batch.
Can I add a capital letter or a separator?
No. Names are emitted in lower case with the optional number appended directly, so there is no capital, underscore, dot or other separator, and no setting for the width of the number. A site with a stricter format will need the names edited afterwards.
Are the names guaranteed to be unique or available?
Neither. The draws are independent, so a batch can contain a repeat, and nothing checks whether a name exists on any service - the tool only produces strings. Deduplicate the output if the names have to be distinct.
What does the numbers checkbox do exactly?
When it is on, a whole number between zero and nine hundred and ninety-nine is appended to each word without padding. When it is off, the name is just the bare word, which is why switching it off narrows the output to the thirty words in the list.

How Random Username behaves in detail
These are the specifics of this implementation — the exact ranges, defaults and fixed settings you are working with.
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Input | a checkbox labelled Include numbers, switched on by default, and one number field labelled Count starting at ten and limited by the form to the window from one to one hundred |
| Vocabulary | each username is one whole word drawn from a fixed list of thirty short English nouns such as apple, knight, ocean and spark |
| Numbers | with the checkbox on, a random number between zero and nine hundred and ninety-nine is appended without padding - tiger7 and tiger701 are both possible |
| Casing | the words are lower-case in the source and the result is emitted in lower-case throughout |
| Output | one username per line, as many as the count field asks for |
| Button | the result appears when the calculate button is pressed; the fields do not recalculate as you type |

What Random Username does not do
Knowing the edges of a tool saves more time than another list of its features. These are the cases where it will not do what you might expect.
- The vocabulary is tiny and fixed. Thirty words make a small space of names, and with the numbers switched off there are only thirty possible outputs - this is a quick way to fill a test form, not a generator for unique accounts, and it never produces separators, capitals or two-word names.
- There are no length or character controls. There is no minimum length, no option for underscores or dots between the word and the number, no leet-speak and no way to fix the digit width - a site that requires eight characters or a special character will reject most of what comes out.
- Duplicates are expected. The draws are independent, so the same word with the same number can appear twice in one batch, and there is no de-duplication option, no sorting and no check that a name is free anywhere - the list is emitted in the order it was drawn.
