About Credit Card Generator

Credit Card Generator produces numbers that satisfy the check-digit algorithm used to validate card numbers, for one of four major card schemes. They are the standard way to populate a payment form fixture with values that pass client-side validation, which a purely random string of digits would not.

Each number follows the conventions of its scheme: the issuer prefix and the total length match what that brand actually uses, so a generated number behaves like a real one in length checks, prefix checks and formatting. That is exactly the property that makes a test meaningful, since a form rejects digits that pass the check digit but fail the prefix rule.

The numbers are test data and nothing else. They are not tied to any account and carry no value, and the generator does not check whether a particular combination happens to be in use — so a generated number could coincide with a live one, which is precisely why these must never be used in a transaction or in anything that resembles one. Use them with a sandbox payment endpoint or a local test form, and nowhere else.

How to use Credit Card Generator

  1. 1 Choose the card scheme whose number format you want to test.
  2. 2 Set how many numbers you need.
  3. 3 Paste them into a form running against a sandbox or a local test environment.

Frequently asked questions

Do these numbers pass validation?

They satisfy the check-digit algorithm and follow the length and prefix conventions of the chosen scheme, so they pass the checks a payment form normally performs. That is what makes them useful as fixtures for testing input handling.

Can I use one to pay for something?

No. They are not linked to an account and carry no value, and using them for a transaction is fraud. They exist for testing form logic against a sandbox endpoint, and that is their only legitimate use.

How does the scheme affect the result?

Through the issuer prefix and the total length — one scheme uses a fifteen-digit number while the others use sixteen. A form that validates prefixes will therefore accept the number for the scheme you selected and reject it for the others, which is the behaviour being tested.

Why does the check digit matter?

Because it is the first thing a payment form verifies, before any network call. A fixture built from arbitrary digits fails at that point and never exercises the rest of the flow, which is why generating check-valid values saves a great deal of testing time.

How Credit Card Generator behaves in detail

These are the specifics of this implementation — the exact ranges, defaults and fixed settings you are working with.

Parameter Value
Brands offered 4 — Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover (default Visa)
Prefixes used 4 for Visa · 51–55 for Mastercard · 34 and 37 for Amex · 6011 and 65 for Discover
Number width 15 digits for Amex, 16 digits for the other three brands
Check digit computed by the Luhn algorithm, so every number printed passes a Luhn check
Batch output 1 to 100 numbers, default 5, one per line

What Credit Card Generator does not do

Knowing the edges of a tool saves more time than another list of its features. These are the cases where it will not do what you might expect.

  • Luhn validity is a checksum, not an account. The digits after the fixed prefix are random, so no bank ever issued these numbers and any gateway will decline them — they exist to make a form's validation pass.
  • Nothing beyond the number is produced: no expiry date, no CVV, no cardholder name and no issuing bank, so a test form that validates those fields still needs values from somewhere else.
  • The generator holds no BIN database — only the brand prefixes above — so it cannot emit a number tied to a real issuer range, and it draws digits with Math.random() rather than a cryptographic source.
