About Credit Card Validator

Credit Card Validator runs the Luhn algorithm over a card number and reports whether its check digit is consistent with the rest of the digits. It strips any spaces or hyphens you paste in, requires at least twelve digits, then walks the number from the right, doubling every second digit and subtracting nine from any result above nine, before checking whether the total is divisible by ten.

Luhn catches most transcription errors: a single mistyped digit, or two adjacent digits swapped, almost always breaks it, which is why a made-up number rarely passes. What it cannot do is tell you whether the card is real, whether the account exists, whether it holds funds, or reliably which brand issued it — a number can satisfy the checksum and still be entirely fictitious.

That makes the tool suitable for validating input in a form or generating test data, and unsuitable for anything resembling an authorization decision. It also means you should think twice before pasting a real card number into any page you do not control, though this one processes everything locally with no server to send it to.

How to use Credit Card Validator

  1. 1 Paste the card number, with or without spaces and hyphens.
  2. 2 Read the verdict, which is computed as you type.
  3. 3 Treat a pass as "the digits are internally consistent", not as "this card is valid".

Frequently asked questions

What is the Luhn algorithm?

A simple checksum used by most card numbers. Every second digit from the right is doubled, results above nine are reduced by nine, and the totals are summed. If the sum divides evenly by ten, the number passes.

Does a pass mean the card is real?

No. The checksum only confirms the digits are internally consistent. A completely invented number can be built to pass, and a genuinely issued number can fail if you mistype one digit.

Why is a minimum of twelve digits required?

Real card numbers are at least that long, and shorter strings would produce meaningless results. Anything under twelve digits is reported as invalid without being tested.

Is it safe to enter my card number?

The check runs entirely in your browser with no network request, so nothing is transmitted or stored. Even so, it is good practice not to paste real card numbers into any third-party page you do not control.

How Credit Card Validator behaves in detail

These are the specifics of this implementation — the exact ranges, defaults and fixed settings you are working with.

Parameter Value
Check performed the Luhn mod-10 checksum, and nothing else
Shortest accepted 12 digits — a shorter string fails before the checksum is computed
Non-digits deleted rather than rejected — the sum runs on whatever digits remain
Verdict one line: ✓ Valid card number (Luhn) or ✗ Invalid card number
Default sample 4111111111111111, reported as valid

What Credit Card Validator does not do

Knowing the edges of a tool saves more time than another list of its features. These are the cases where it will not do what you might expect.

  • This is a checksum test and nothing more. It does not read the issuer prefix, apply the digit-length rule of any brand, or ask whether the number was ever issued, so 0000000000000000 passes exactly as cleanly as a documented Visa test number.
  • Every character that is not a digit is thrown away before the sum, so "call me 4111111111111111" is reported as a valid card number. Separators, letters and surrounding words are tolerated instead of being flagged as malformed input.
  • A pass does not mean the card exists. Documentation test numbers and cancelled ranges satisfy the same mod-10 arithmetic, and the form has no BIN database, no expiry field and no CVC field — the digits alone are all that is examined.
