About Zodiac Sign

Zodiac Sign returns the Western sun sign for a day of the year. You give a month and a day, the tool folds them into a single number - the month times one hundred plus the day - and returns the first sign in a fixed table whose cut-off that number does not exceed. The table lists Capricorn twice, at the opening and at the closing of the year, so the sign that spans the new year is covered on both sides.

The boundaries are the conventional tropical ones. Capricorn runs from the twenty-third of December through the twentieth of January, Aquarius from the twenty-first of January to the nineteenth of February, and so on around the wheel, with the twenty-second of December still reading as Sagittarius because the last day listed belongs to the sign that owns it. Only the sign name comes back - no element, no modality and no compatibility notes.

Two behaviours are worth knowing. Impossible dates are not detected: the thirtieth of February is classified as readily as any real day, and a month past twelve falls through to Capricorn, with the words Invalid date reserved for text whose first segment, before the hyphen, cannot be read as a number - a leading hyphen or an empty field is read as a month of zero rather than rejected. An empty field is not an error either - it is read as month zero day zero and reports Capricorn, so a blank form gives a confident answer rather than a prompt. There is also no year input, so the cusps that shift by a day between years cannot be honoured.

How to use Zodiac Sign

  1. 1 Enter the date as a month and a day in MM-DD form, for example 03-15.
  2. 2 Run the tool to see the sign name.
  3. 3 Check the boundary dates if the day falls near the start or the end of a sign.

Frequently asked questions

What date format does it expect?

A month and a day as two numbers separated by a hyphen, such as 03-15 or 12-23. A year is neither expected nor used, and anything after the day is ignored.

What happens with an impossible date such as 02-30?

It is classified anyway rather than rejected. A day that cannot exist is placed by its number alone, and a month past twelve falls through to Capricorn. The words Invalid date appear only when the segment before the hyphen cannot be read as a number.

Why does an empty field return Capricorn?

An empty value is read as month zero day zero, which the comparison places inside the first Capricorn block. It is not an error, so a blank form produces an answer rather than asking for a date - check the field if the result looks arbitrary.

Does it cover cusps, birth times or other zodiacs?

No. There is no year field, so the cusps that move by a day between years cannot be honoured, and no time of birth, ascendant or moon sign is computed. The Chinese and sidereal zodiacs, and any element or compatibility information, are outside what this tool does.

How Zodiac Sign behaves in detail

These are the specifics of this implementation — the exact ranges, defaults and fixed settings you are working with.

Parameter Value
Input one text field labelled Date (MM-DD), starting at 03-15, evaluated when the button is pressed
Output a single English sign name, such as Pisces for the sample date
Boundaries thirteen fixed cut-offs, one per sign, with Capricorn listed twice so that it covers both the opening and the closing of the year
Comparison the month and the day are folded into one number - the month times one hundred plus the day - and the first sign whose cut-off it does not exceed is returned
Capricorn the year-end block runs from 12-23 through 12-31 and the year-opening block from 01-01 through 01-20
Boundary day 12-22 still reads as Sagittarius, so the last day listed for a sign belongs to that sign rather than to the next

What Zodiac Sign does not do

Knowing the edges of a tool saves more time than another list of its features. These are the cases where it will not do what you might expect.

  • Impossible dates are not detected. A day that cannot exist, such as 02-30, is classified anyway, and a month past twelve falls through to Capricorn - the words Invalid date are reserved for input whose first segment, before the hyphen, cannot be read as a number - a leading hyphen or an empty field is read as a month of zero and falls into Capricorn rather than being rejected.
  • An empty field is not treated as an error either. It is read as month zero day zero and reports Capricorn, so a blank form returns a confident answer instead of prompting for a date, and there is no sign that anything is wrong.
  • The tool knows the tropical year and nothing else. There is no year field, so the cusps that shift by a day between years cannot be honoured; no time of birth, no ascendant and no moon sign; no sidereal or Chinese zodiac; and no element, modality or compatibility information of any kind.
