About Age Calculator
Age Calculator works out how old someone is today as a full calendar breakdown of years, months and days, and also as a running total of days. Enter a birth date in YYYY-MM-DD form and it compares it with your device's current date, borrowing from the month and the year where the day or month count would otherwise go negative — so a 1990-vintage date viewed today returns an exact years-months-days figure rather than an approximation.
The calendar breakdown and the total-day count answer slightly different questions. The years-months-days line is how people normally state an age; the total-days line is the raw elapsed count, which is what you want for a precise record. Both are derived from the same two dates, so they always agree with each other.
Because it reads the clock on the machine it runs on, the answer depends on your local date and time zone. Two people in different zones entering the same birth date at the same instant can see a one-day difference at a birthday boundary. And if the birth date lies in the future, the calculation still returns a figure — so check the input rather than trusting a nonsensical result.
There is one input and no settings beside it. A second date cannot be supplied, so age on a particular past or future date cannot be asked for — the calculation is always against the present moment — and no date-time is accepted, only a plain calendar date, so a birth time plays no part in the result. Nothing about the answer is contextualised: the tool does not report the next birthday, the day of the week the person was born on, the total in weeks or months, or the zodiac and life-stage figures some age calculators add. Because the arithmetic borrows from the preceding month as it counts down, the years-months-days line follows calendar convention rather than a simple division, which is worth knowing when comparing against a tool that divides elapsed days by thirty.
How to use Age Calculator
- 1 Enter the birth date in YYYY-MM-DD format, for example 1990-01-01.
- 2 Run the tool to see the age as years, months and days plus a total day count.
- 3 Read the total-days line when you need a single precise number rather than a calendar description.
Frequently asked questions
Does it account for leap years?
Yes, through the calendar arithmetic itself. Borrowing a month adds the length of the preceding month, and February contributes 29 days in a leap year. The total-days figure reflects the real number of days elapsed, including every leap day in between.
Why might my age differ by a day from another calculator?
Because this tool uses the current date on your device. Differences in time zone, or the exact moment you run it, can shift the result by one day right at a birthday boundary. It works from the present moment rather than a fixed reference date.
Can I calculate age on a specific date rather than today?
Not with this tool — it always uses the present moment. To measure between two fixed dates, use the Date Difference tool, which takes both endpoints as inputs.
What does the total days line include?
It is the number of whole days between the birth date and now, ignoring the calendar breakdown. That is the figure to quote when you need a single exact count of days lived.

How Age Calculator behaves in detail
These are the specifics of this implementation — the exact ranges, defaults and fixed settings you are working with.
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Input format | a date in YYYY-MM-DD form |
| Output | years, months and days, plus a total-day count |
| Default input | 1990-01-01 |
| Month arithmetic | borrow-aware — the days-in-previous-month length is used when days go negative |

What Age Calculator does not do
Knowing the edges of a tool saves more time than another list of its features. These are the cases where it will not do what you might expect.
- The calculation is done in the local time zone of the browser, so the answer can differ by a day depending on where the device is set — and it cannot know the time zone you were born in.
- Only the calendar-date difference is computed. It does not give the age in completed months, weeks or hours, and it assumes the input is a valid date — malformed input returns an error rather than a best guess.
