About Remove Extra Spaces

Remove Extra Spaces tidies up text that has acquired surplus whitespace, which is what happens when content is pasted between applications, exported from a table, or assembled from several sources. Runs of spaces and tabs collapse to a single space, and it finishes by trimming the ends of the text so it starts and finishes on a real character.

It also tidies the vertical whitespace. Three or more consecutive line breaks are reduced to two, which is the convention for a single blank line between paragraphs. That is a deliberate limit rather than a full collapse — the blank line separating blocks of text survives, since removing it would merge the structure of the document rather than just its spacing.

What it will not do is fix spacing that is meaningful. Indentation at the start of a line made of spaces is collapsed along with every other run, so text pasted from a code editor will lose its alignment. For that case, leave the indentation alone and treat this as a prose-cleanup tool.

How to use Remove Extra Spaces

  1. 1 Paste the text with the surplus whitespace.
  2. 2 Read the tidied output, with single spaces between words.
  3. 3 Check the first and last characters, since the ends are trimmed as well.

Frequently asked questions

Will it remove the blank lines between my paragraphs?

No, it preserves a single blank line and only collapses runs of three or more breaks. That keeps the paragraph structure readable while removing the accidental vertical space that accumulates when text is pasted between editors.

Does it affect indentation?

Yes, and that is the one case to watch. Leading spaces are a run of spaces like any other, so they collapse to one. Text pasted from a code listing or a fixed-width report will lose its alignment, and for those you should target the internal spacing only.

Is trailing whitespace at the end of lines removed?

The text as a whole is trimmed at both ends, so leading and trailing whitespace around the whole block goes. Whitespace at the end of an interior line collapses to a single space rather than disappearing entirely.

Can it fix non-breaking spaces?

No. A non-breaking space is a distinct character rather than a space, so it is not matched by the collapse rule. If text from a web page looks like it has unstoppable double spacing, that is usually the cause, and it needs a separate replacement pass.

How Remove Extra Spaces behaves in detail

These are the specifics of this implementation — the exact ranges, defaults and fixed settings you are working with.

Parameter Value
Spaces and tabs every run of literal spaces and tabs is replaced by exactly one space
Blank lines a run of three or more newlines is reduced to exactly two — one blank line is kept
Ends of the block trimmed — leading and trailing whitespace is removed from the whole text
Space characters matched the literal space and tab only; other whitespace such as the non-breaking space is not collapsed
Update mode live — recomputed on every keystroke

What Remove Extra Spaces does not do

Knowing the edges of a tool saves more time than another list of its features. These are the cases where it will not do what you might expect.

  • Indentation is flattened rather than removed. Each run of spaces or tabs becomes exactly one space, so a nested outline or an indented code block keeps a single leading space per level while the original depth of nesting becomes unrecoverable.
  • Only the literal space and tab characters are collapsed. A non-breaking space (U+00A0), which is what you get when copying from many web pages and PDFs, is not in the pattern, so a double gap that looks like an extra space survives the pass completely untouched.
  • No distinction is made between accidental and intentional spacing. Everything collapses to one space, so a deliberate double space after a full stop, or column alignment built out of spaces in a plain-text table, is destroyed along with the gaps you wanted gone.
