About Remove Line Breaks

Remove Line Breaks joins a multi-line passage into a single paragraph. Every run of whitespace — newlines, tabs and repeated spaces alike — is replaced by one space, and the ends are trimmed, so the output reads as continuous prose rather than as lines with gaps in them.

The run-based matching is the important part. Because consecutive whitespace of any kind is treated as one unit, hard-wrapped text rejoins correctly without leaving doubled spaces where the original line breaks and following indentation met. Text copied out of an email client with its line wrapping intact is the typical input.

What it cannot do is decide where a line break was meaningful. In text where paragraph structure matters, joining everything produces one long block with no way to tell where the paragraphs were, so work on a copy and keep the original if you may need it again. The same applies to lists and tables, where the line structure is the data.

How to use Remove Line Breaks

  1. 1 Paste the wrapped text.
  2. 2 Read the single-paragraph output.
  3. 3 Check that no intended paragraph structure was lost, since all breaks are treated alike.

Frequently asked questions

Will I get double spaces where the lines joined?

No. Runs of whitespace of any length or composition collapse to a single space, so a line break followed by indentation rejoins cleanly. That is the reason the matching works on runs rather than on individual characters.

Does it keep paragraph breaks?

No, and that is the main thing to be careful about. Every break is treated identically, because a line break carries no information about whether it separated paragraphs or merely wrapped a line. Preserve a copy of the original if the structure matters.

Can I undo the operation?

There is nothing to undo in the tool itself — the original text is untouched, so simply edit the input rather than trying to reconstruct the breaks. Working from a copy of your source is the practical safeguard.

What happens to a tab-separated list?

It becomes a single line with spaces where the tabs were, which destroys the column structure. For tabular data, join the lines with a delimiter instead of collapsing all whitespace.

How Remove Line Breaks behaves in detail

These are the specifics of this implementation — the exact ranges, defaults and fixed settings you are working with.

Parameter Value
Pattern matched every run of whitespace: spaces, tabs, newlines, carriage returns and the non-breaking space
Replacement a single space, hard-coded — the join character is not configurable
Result shape one line, with both ends trimmed and no newline left anywhere in the output
Update mode live — recomputed on every keystroke

What Remove Line Breaks does not do

Knowing the edges of a tool saves more time than another list of its features. These are the cases where it will not do what you might expect.

  • Collapsing is applied to all whitespace, not just to line breaks. A tab-separated table loses its tabs and a block indented with four spaces loses its indentation, so the tool cannot join wrapped lines while leaving the rest of the layout as it was.
  • The joiner is always a single space, so nothing can be joined without one. A word hyphenated across a line break comes back as "para- graph" with a stray space in the middle, and there is no option to join with an empty string or with a custom character.
  • The result is irreversible and no report accompanies it. Hard-wrapped prose, a bulleted list and a two-column layout all become the same single line of space-separated words, and the output does not indicate which breaks were removed or how many.
