About Love Calculator

Love Calculator turns two names into a compatibility percentage in the style of the classic playground game. Type two names, and it joins them, folds them through a running hash, and prints a score between zero and one hundred followed by an emoji that matches the mood of the result.

The mechanics are simple and deterministic. The two names are concatenated and lowercased, then hashed with a running formula - the current value times thirty-one plus each character code, taken modulo one hundred and one - so the same two names always produce the same score, regardless of case. The emoji follows the score: a heart-eyed face above eighty, a smiling face above fifty, and a slightly-smiling face otherwise.

The honest framing is that this is a novelty, not a measurement. The score is a function of the letters alone, so anyone who knows the two names can work out the number in advance, and two empty names hash to zero percent without any prompt. There is no weighting, no explanation of the number and nothing else to configure - one pair of names in, one percentage out.

How to use Love Calculator

  1. 1 Enter the first name in the First name field.
  2. 2 Enter the second name in the Second name field.
  3. 3 Run the tool to read the percentage and its emoji.

Frequently asked questions

How is the percentage worked out?

The two names are joined and lowercased, then run through a hash that takes the value times thirty-one plus each character code, modulo one hundred and one. The same two names always give the same score.

Is it case-sensitive?

No. The names are lowercased before the hash, so Alice and Bob give the same result as alice and bob, and the score is identical either way.

What does the emoji mean?

It follows the score: a heart-eyed face above eighty, a smiling face above fifty, and a slightly-smiling face at fifty or below. It is a visual mood for the number, not additional data.

Is this a real compatibility measure?

No. The score is a deterministic hash of the names, so it carries no meaning about any two people. Treat it as a bit of fun - there is no weighting and no explanation behind the number.

How Love Calculator behaves in detail

These are the specifics of this implementation — the exact ranges, defaults and fixed settings you are working with.

Parameter Value
Input two text fields - First name starting at Alice and Second name starting at Bob
Algorithm the two names are joined and lowercased, then hashed with the running formula h equals h times thirty-one plus each character code, taken modulo one hundred and one
Output a single line of the form Love: N percent followed by an emoji, with N between zero and one hundred
Emoji the heart-eyed face for a score above eighty, the smiling face above fifty, and the slightly-smiling face otherwise
Determinism the same two names always give the same score, and the comparison is case-insensitive
Empty names two empty names hash to zero, reported as Love: 0 percent with the mild emoji

What Love Calculator does not do

Knowing the edges of a tool saves more time than another list of its features. These are the cases where it will not do what you might expect.

  • The score is a deterministic hash of the names and nothing more. Anyone can work out that Alice and Bob always give the same number, so the result carries no meaning about compatibility - it is a novelty, not a measurement.
  • There is no validation and no explanation. Empty names produce zero percent without a prompt, and the tool never shows how the number was reached, so the percentage is a black box to the reader.
  • Only one formula and one output exist. There is no weighting, no option to compare more than two names, no scale or range setting, and no way to see the raw hash behind the percentage.
