About Mean Median Mode

Mean Median Mode reports the three classic measures of central tendency for one dataset, which is more useful than any of them alone because they disagree in informative ways. A gap between mean and median is the quickest signal that a distribution is skewed by outliers.

Each measure is computed from the same sorted list. The mean is the total divided by the count; the median is the middle value, or the midpoint of the two central values when the count is even; the mode is whichever value appears most often. Where several values tie for the highest frequency, every tied value is reported.

One behaviour is worth knowing in advance. If every value in the list appears exactly once, no value is more frequent than any other, so the mode field lists them all rather than declaring the list to have no mode. That is a defensible reading of the data rather than a bug, but it surprises people the first time they see it on an all-distinct dataset.

How to use Mean Median Mode

  1. 1 Paste or type the dataset into the Numbers box — commas, spaces and line breaks are all accepted as separators.
  2. 2 Run it — the list is sorted internally first, so the order you typed them in does not matter.
  3. 3 Compare the mean with the median: a wide gap between the two points to outliers pulling the mean.
  4. 4 Read the mode and the frequency in brackets to see how many values tied for it.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my mode showing several numbers?

Those values all occur the same, highest number of times. A dataset can genuinely be bimodal or multimodal, and reporting only one of the tied values would be picking arbitrarily. The frequency in brackets tells you how often they occur.

The mode lists every value in my dataset. What went wrong?

Nothing — every value appears exactly once, so the highest frequency is one and all values qualify. On data with no repeats the mode carries no information, and the mean and median are the measures to read.

How is the median handled with an even number of values?

It is the average of the two central values after sorting. So the median of 1, 2, 3, 4 is 2.5 — a value that does not appear in the data, which is expected and is why the median is described as positional rather than a number you will find in the list.

Which measure should I report?

Income, house prices and waiting times are usually reported as medians because a few extreme values distort the mean. Physical measurements that are close to symmetric are usually reported as means. Showing all three is the safest habit.

How Mean Median Mode behaves in detail

These are the specifics of this implementation — the exact ranges, defaults and fixed settings you are working with.

Parameter Value
Separators recognised commas and any whitespace — the input is split on /[, s]+/ before anything else happens
Sorting the parsed values are sorted ascending in place, which the median depends on and the mean does not
Median rule odd count takes the middle value; even count takes the average of the two middle values
Mode rule a frequency map is built and every value tied at the highest frequency is printed, separated by commas
Precision mean to 4 decimals, median printed unrounded, and the mode line carries its frequency in brackets
Empty result the words "No numbers" when the field yields nothing usable

What Mean Median Mode does not do

Knowing the edges of a tool saves more time than another list of its features. These are the cases where it will not do what you might expect.

  • The mode is simply whatever is tied for most frequent, so a dataset with no repeated value reports every distinct entry as a mode. Nothing here decides that such a collection has "no mode" — it prints them all with a frequency of 1, which is not how many textbooks answer.
  • The median is never rounded. On an even-length list of integers it can end in .5, and on decimal inputs it prints the full float the arithmetic produced — 0.1 and 0.2 give a median of 0.15000000000000002 rather than the 0.15 a reader would write down.
  • The parser decides what counts as data before any statistic runs. A token that is not a number is dropped, and a leading or trailing comma becomes a 0 because Number("") is 0, so "1, 2, 3," is treated as four values and all three statistics shift.
