About Image to PNG

Image to PNG converts any readable image into PNG, the lossless format that keeps every pixel exactly as it was and supports transparency. It is the right target whenever the picture has hard edges, flat colour, text, or any degree of transparency that must survive the conversion.

Lossless is the key property. A PNG conversion does not discard detail to save space, so a graphic with a sharp boundary, a logo or a screenshot comes through without the fringing and colour noise that a lossy format introduces around edges. This is why interface graphics and diagrams are conventionally distributed as PNG.

The trade is file size. Because nothing is thrown away, PNG files are generally much larger than JPEG or WebP versions of the same photograph, and enlarging a compressed source into a lossless format makes the file bigger without improving the picture — the detail was already lost before the conversion. Note also that any metadata in the original is not carried across, since the output is written fresh from the image data.

How to use Image to PNG

  1. 1 Choose the image you want as a PNG.
  2. 2 Download the PNG.
  3. 3 Use the lossless result wherever sharp edges or transparency matter.

Frequently asked questions

Will the converted image look better than the original?

No, neither better nor worse. Converting to a lossless format preserves what is already there; it cannot restore detail that an earlier lossy encoding discarded. It prevents further loss, which is a different and more modest benefit.

Does transparency survive the conversion?

Yes, since PNG carries an alpha channel. That is the main reason to convert a cut-out image or a graphic with a transparent background to PNG before putting it on a coloured page.

Why is my PNG file so much larger?

Because lossless compression keeps every pixel, so a photographic image that a lossy format squeezed into a few hundred kilobytes can become several megabytes. If size matters more than exactness, keep the image in a lossy format instead.

How Image to PNG behaves in detail

These are the specifics of this implementation — the exact ranges, defaults and fixed settings you are working with.

Parameter Value
Output format always image/png at the original dimensions — the lossless path, with no palette reduction
Quality argument none is passed to the encoder, and no field on this page could supply one
Fields none — choose a file and run it
Same pipeline as the Format Converter set to its PNG option: both load the image onto a canvas at natural size and encode once, so they produce the same result

What Image to PNG does not do

Knowing the edges of a tool saves more time than another list of its features. These are the cases where it will not do what you might expect.

  • The output is a plain re-encode, not an optimiser. There is no colour quantisation, no bit-depth choice and no option to drop metadata, so a photographic JPEG put through here usually comes back substantially larger than the file that went in.
  • There is no resizing and no quality control on this page. A PNG that is too heavy for a page has to go through the Resize tools, because the Compress tool cannot emit PNG at all.
  • Whatever the input carried is flattened into a fresh RGBA bitmap — animation, embedded colour profiles and auxiliary channels are not part of what gets written back.
