About EAN-13 Barcode Generator

EAN-13 Barcode Generator draws a scannable EAN-13 barcode from twelve digits. Type them in and the page computes the thirteenth check digit itself, using the standard alternating weights of 1 and 3, then renders the full 95-bar pattern as an image directly on the page with the thirteen digits printed underneath. A sample number is loaded to start with, so the barcode is on screen before you type anything.

The input is forgiving in one direction and strict in another. Non-digit characters are stripped before anything else, so a number pasted with spaces or dashes still works. Fewer than twelve digits after cleaning returns a plain message telling you what is missing rather than a broken image. Digits beyond the twelfth, however, are silently ignored - which matters if you paste a full thirteen-digit EAN, because the page throws away its check digit and computes a fresh one that disagrees whenever the pasted one was wrong.

The drawing is fixed by the standard: one-unit bars in black on white, eighty units tall, with the digits below. There are no size, colour or resolution settings, and no export options beyond the image itself - which makes it a quick way to produce one correct barcode rather than a label-printing workflow. Other symbologies, from Code 128 to the two-dimensional codes, are separate tools.

How to use EAN-13 Barcode Generator

  1. 1 Type or paste your number into the field - the sample shows a typical retail code.
  2. 2 Check that at least twelve digits remain after any stray characters are ignored.
  3. 3 Read the barcode, which is drawn on the page with the computed check digit appended.
  4. 4 Copy or save the image if it is the one you need, and re-enter a new number to draw another.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to supply the check digit?

No - supply twelve digits and the page computes the thirteenth. If you paste a full thirteen-digit code, the first twelve are used and the pasted check digit is discarded, so a code whose check digit was already wrong gets corrected here rather than reproduced.

What happens to spaces or dashes in my number?

They are stripped before counting, so a formatted retail number still produces a clean barcode. What matters is that at least twelve digits remain; anything short of that returns a message asking for them.

Can it make other barcode types?

This page draws EAN-13 only. Code 128, Code 39, UPC-A and the two-dimensional codes are not produced here - each has its own considerations and is not simply a setting away.

Can I change the size or colours of the bars?

The drawing follows the standard geometry - one-unit black bars, eighty units tall, digits underneath - with no size, colour or resolution options. Scaling the saved image afterwards in another program is the usual route when a particular print size is needed.

How EAN-13 Barcode Generator behaves in detail

These are the specifics of this implementation — the exact ranges, defaults and fixed settings you are working with.

Parameter Value
Input one text field labeled 12 digits, defaulting to 400638133393
Cleaning non-digit characters are stripped from the input before anything else is checked
Shortage fewer than 12 digits after cleaning returns the message Need 12 digits in place of an image
Check digit the thirteenth digit is computed from alternating weights of 1 and 3 over the first twelve and appended
Geometry 95 one-unit-wide bars, 80 units tall, inside a 95 by 100 SVG canvas, with the thirteen digits printed underneath
Output an SVG image delivered as a data URI, rendered in place on the page

What EAN-13 Barcode Generator does not do

Knowing the edges of a tool saves more time than another list of its features. These are the cases where it will not do what you might expect.

  • The symbology is EAN-13 and only EAN-13. Code 128, UPC-A, Code 39, ITF and the two-dimensional codes have no path here, and an EAN-8 or a 14-digit GS1 input cannot be produced - a different page or nothing.
  • Digits beyond the twelfth are silently ignored: the code takes the first twelve and discards the rest, so a full 13-digit EAN with its own check digit has that check thrown away and a new one computed in its place. The two disagree whenever the pasted check digit was already wrong.
  • The drawing is fixed. Bar width, height, colours and quiet-zone size are all hard-coded constants, there is no export format other than the SVG data URI itself, and no resolution or print-density setting for label stock.
