About Color Converter

Color Converter takes a single color and reports it in five notations at once — uppercase HEX, rgb(), hsl(), hsv() and cmyk(). It is the tool to reach for when a color arrives in one form and you need it in another for a stylesheet, a design handoff or a print brief, and you would rather see every representation side by side than run five separate conversions.

The input is deliberately forgiving. It accepts three-, four-, six- and eight-digit hex, the rgb() and rgba() functions written with commas or spaces, hsl() and hsla(), and a short list of standard color names such as navy, teal, gold and coral. A value it cannot interpret is reported as an error rather than quietly turned into a plausible-looking color.

Two details are worth knowing before you copy the output. The hsl() and hsv() figures are rounded to whole numbers, so converting hex to HSL and back can land one step away from your starting color. And while rgb(), rgba(), hsl() and hsla() are valid CSS, the hsv() and cmyk() lines are labels for people — browsers do not understand them, so paste only the HEX or rgb() form into code.

How to use Color Converter

  1. 1 Type or paste a color in any supported notation — hex, rgb(), hsl() or a common color name.
  2. 2 All five representations are computed live as you type; there is no button to press.
  3. 3 Copy the line in the notation your target needs — HEX or rgb() for a stylesheet.

Frequently asked questions

Which color formats can I paste in?

Three-, four-, six- and eight-digit hex; rgb() and rgba(); hsl() and hsla(); and about thirty standard color names including black, white, navy, teal, gold and coral. Values outside that set, such as lab() or hwb(), are not recognised.

Why are HSV and CMYK shown if CSS does not support them?

Because they are genuinely useful to designers and printers even though browsers ignore them. The tool prints them for reference; only the HEX, rgb() and hsl() lines are valid CSS values.

Will I get back exactly the same color if I convert and convert again?

Not perfectly. HSL and HSV are printed with whole-number percentages, so a hex to HSL to hex round trip can come back one unit off. If you need an exact match, keep the original hex value.

Does it handle transparency?

Only partly, and it is worth being precise. An eight-digit hex like #4f46e580 or an rgba() value with an alpha channel is accepted, but all five output lines describe the fully opaque color — the alpha is parsed and then not shown anywhere in the result.

How Color Converter behaves in detail

These are the specifics of this implementation — the exact ranges, defaults and fixed settings you are working with.

Parameter Value
Formats produced HEX, RGB, HSL, HSV and CMYK, all from one input
Accepted inputs #rgb, #rgba, #rrggbb, #rrggbbaa, rgb(), rgba(), hsl(), hsla(), and 30 named colours
Named colour coverage 30 names, not the full CSS set of 148
Alpha channel parsed from the input but not carried into the output rows

What Color Converter does not do

Knowing the edges of a tool saves more time than another list of its features. These are the cases where it will not do what you might expect.

  • The named-colour table holds 30 entries (black, white, red, lime, blue, yellow, cyan, magenta, gray, grey, silver, maroon, olive, green, teal, navy, purple, orange, pink, brown, gold, violet, indigo, tomato, coral, salmon, khaki, plum, orchid, turquoise). CSS defines 148, so a name outside this list parses as invalid rather than resolving.
  • Transparency is read but not reported. Feed in rgba(255, 0, 0, 0.5) and the HEX/RGB/HSL/HSV/CMYK rows describe the fully opaque colour — the 0.5 alpha appears in none of them.
