About Text to Speech
Text to Speech reads your text aloud using the speech engine built into your browser and operating system. Type or paste the passage, optionally change the speaking rate, and run the tool; the audio plays through your device's normal output, with no file to download and nothing to install.
The voice is whatever your system provides as its default, so the accent, gender and quality of the reading depend on the machine rather than on the tool. The rate control scales the pace from half to double normal speed, useful for proofreading a draft quickly or slowing a sentence down to check a pronunciation.
Two limits are worth knowing in advance. Availability varies: desktop browsers almost always include a speech engine, but some mobile and embedded browsers do not, and in that case the tool explicitly reports that synthesis is unsupported rather than staying silent. And there is no voice picker, no language selection and no pause or resume — running it again stops the current reading and starts the new one. Since the text is handed to the system engine, treat it as you would any other use of your operating system's speech feature.
How to use Text to Speech
- 1 Type or paste the text you want read aloud.
- 2 Adjust the rate if you want it faster or slower than normal.
- 3 Run the tool to start playback; run it again to replace the current reading.
Frequently asked questions
Why does it sound different on my other device?
Because the voice comes from the operating system, not from the tool. Each platform ships its own default voice, so the same text can be read by noticeably different voices on a phone, a laptop and a desktop machine.
Can I choose a specific voice or language?
No. The tool uses the system default voice and offers only a rate control, with no voice or language selection. Changing the voice means changing your operating system's speech settings.
It says speech synthesis is unsupported. Why?
Your browser does not expose the speech synthesis interface, which happens on some mobile and embedded browsers. Desktop browsers generally provide it, so trying a different browser usually resolves the problem.
Can I save the audio to a file?
Not from this tool — it plays through the system speech engine rather than generating an audio file, so there is nothing to download. The Tone Generator and the noise generators do produce downloadable WAV files if you need an audio asset.

How Text to Speech behaves in detail
These are the specifics of this implementation — the exact ranges, defaults and fixed settings you are working with.
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Engine | the browser's built-in speech synthesis (window.speechSynthesis) |
| Rate range | 0.5 – 2, adjustable in 0.1 steps (default 1) |
| Network use | none from this page — audio is generated by the browser or OS |
| Availability | depends entirely on the browser and operating system |

What Text to Speech does not do
Knowing the edges of a tool saves more time than another list of its features. These are the cases where it will not do what you might expect.
- Which voice speaks is not selectable here. Voices come from whatever the browser and operating system provide, so the same text sounds different on Windows, macOS, Android and iOS — and their availability cannot be guaranteed.
- Only speed is exposed. Pitch, volume, and per-voice selection are not adjustable, and there is no way to download the result as an audio file — the audio is played, not saved.
